Geographic Area of Responsibility: SET 7 Southwest Alabama Region (Covington, Crenshaw, Pike, Bullock, Barbour, Coffee, Dale, Henry, Geneva, and Houston Counties)
The Regional Extension Agent (REA) is a regional-based professional of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) who represents the research-based programs and resources available through Alabama A&M University and Auburn University. Regional Extension Agents work collaboratively with County Extension Coordinators, other regional agents, state specialists, and clientele to assess needs then develop and deliver programs within the mission of ACES.
Duties and responsibilities include: Serves as a contributing member on the Extension Human Nutrition, Diet and Health Program Team. Assists in developing and implementing priority programs in response to identified county and state needs and in developing an annual Team program plan-of-work.
Functions as an effective educator using innovative and creative approaches, including social media. Establishes oneself as a credible resource for teaching adults and youth how to make better decisions regarding health and wellness and dietary needs. Writes and develops quality educational materials to support programming. Offers comprehensive and complex programming to support long-term change and participates in interdisciplinary programming.
Establishes, organizes, facilitates, and maintains networks and coalitions at the local and regional levels to multiply efforts and to bring added value to ACES clients.
Identifies innovative ways to serve under-served and under-represented audiences. Cooperates and communicates with County Extension Coordinators, County Commissions, regional agents, state specialists, and appropriate Assistant Director for Programs regarding county and regional projects. Maintains a positive working relationship with staff and clients in assigned geographical and in subject-matter areas.
In cooperation with County Extension Coordinators, follows appropriate fiscal management for programmatic needs. Appropriately administers the materials and financial resources of ACES. Evaluates major programs and completes system reports when due. Informs and educates the public and key stakeholders about program outcomes. Secures resources (volunteers, contracts, grants, fees, and donations) to support identified needs at county and regional level.
Minimum qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health, Food Science, or some other closely related filed with at least two years of relevant work experience. A Master’s degree is preferred and does not require experience to apply. The successful incumbent will be required to obtain a master’s degree within five years of successfully completing a probationary period.
Candidates must demonstrate: 1) competence or ability to teach human nutrition, health promotion and wellness, food safety or dietary programs, 2) knowledge and skill related to effective adult and youth education delivery methods and the ability to create and deliver education programs through print and visual presentation, 3) the ability to organize, coordinate, and communicate effectively with a wide range of audience and the mass media; 4) the ability to speak and write fluently in English; and 5)experiences related to understanding the opportunities and the education needs of diverse clientele . This positon requires travel to carry out Extension responsibilities, and candidates must have access to reliable transportation.
