The Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, established in 1981, is the only self-governing graduate and professional school of nutrition in North America. Its mission is to improve the nutritional well-being of people worldwide through the creation of new knowledge; the application and dissemination of information to inform evidence-based policy making; and the education and training of future leaders in the field.
This mission is fulfilled by bringing together experts from the areas of clinical nutrition, social and public policy, and biomedicine. Faculty at the school include biomedical scientists, economists, epidemiologists, nutritionists, physicians, political scientists and psychologists who focus on a myriad of issues with the common thread of nutrition and its role in fostering the growth and development of human populations.
This full time, term-limited position for an Assistant Field Researcher/Field Researcher offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a study of food security program sustainability and exit strategies linked to the ViM Plus Project, a development food assistance activity funded by USAID/Food-for-Peace and based in Sanmatenga Province, Burkina Faso.
A collaborative effort between the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, ACDI/VOCA, and research institutions in Burkina Faso, the study aims to evaluate the sustainability of the ViM Project, which ended in 2018, and discern variables that are predictive of sustainable activities and impacts to develop tools that can be used to inform the design, monitoring, and evaluation of the ViM Plus project with a sustainability lens. The study forms a component of ACDI/VOCA's larger collaborating, learning, and adapting (CLA) agenda. It also builds on a several-year, USAID Food for Peace research effort conducted by Drs. Beatrice Rogers and Jennifer Coates through subcontract to the FANTA project, to identify the extent to which food security activities and impacts were sustained in Bolivia, Honduras, India, and Kenya and the factors that increase the likelihood of enduring effects. The present project will extend and build on that research.
The current study is seeking to hire 1 Assistant Field Researchers/Field Researcher to work under the supervision of the study PI (Dr. Rogers) and Co-PI (Dr. Coates) on activities related to the design, implementation, and analysis of the research study. The Assistant Field Researcher/Researcher will be based in Boston with multi-month travel to Burkina Faso in order to implement the project's qualitative and quantitative data collection activities. The position will also require maintaining excellent relationships with in-country collaborators and donor representatives and developing in-country capacity among collaborators regarding designing and evaluating programs with sustainability as a key component.
The work will start as soon as a successful candidate is identified. Initial position is for one year with the possibility of extension.
Master's degree or PhD in policy, food policy, public health, development economics, agriculture and/or another related field.
At least 2 years of population-based research experience, some or all in a low- or middle-income country.
Demonstrated experience collecting and analyzing qualitative data.
Experience designing and implementing quantitative surveys.
Experience living or working in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Excellent research skills including experience in survey design and implementation, preferably in low-income countries.
Proficient in data analysis programs (such as SPSS, STATA or Nvivo) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent professional French and English, written and oral.
Experience working collaboratively with a range of counterparts
Demonstrated leadership qualities and ability to motivate others around a common agenda.
Excellent organizational and managerial ability, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines with efficiency and accuracy.
Ability to communicate with clarity, sensitivity, diplomacy and tact with a range of high-level stakeholders, including a high level of interaction with scholars, scientists, technical experts, government officials, policymakers, and international agency officials, as well as with local staff and study participants.
Ability to write clearly and effectively for scientific and policy audiences and to edit detailed scientific documents.
Capacity and commitment to function as part of a team.
Cultural sensitivity, patience and respect, and a helpful attitude toward resolving problems and answering questions are essential.
Experience managing research projects and/or programs in low-income countries in nutrition, health, or related technical sectors.
This would be an excellent post-doctoral position, but we would also consider candidates who meet requirements and have finished their MS.
Special Work Schedule Requirements: The needs of the position are erratic; there will be periods of intense activity as well as regular (daily) internal travel to research sites in Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso is a low-income country with associated risks of poor water and food quality, disease exposure, and limited health care. Security is also a consideration and will be monitored. Occasional research team meetings and reporting deadlines as well as field work require working beyond normal office hours. Work will be conducted with a supportive and collegial research team.
